2 Friends have had their job offers receinded

In the past 4 months I have had two friends who choose not to offer up the fact that they had to declare BK (one in 2008 and the other in 2010). The company's never asked and the job applications never asked, offers made and after the background checks they were told the offers were no longer valid.

I guess companies are really being intense about checking credit reports and BK's. So sad both of these folks lost their jobs because their company's declared BK (and yet those companies are now making profits and got a 2nd chance) and they were let go because of it and now they are being denied a 2nd chance... It makes me so darn mad and its so unfair

      Hi Friend:

I don't really know if the credit scores and BK play into the job hiring process. Some people say it does; others say it does not. I can only tell you my tale.

I tried twice--actually more than that, for both FT and PT positions within the Library System in our county. I have been shut out at all levels, although the Library Director knows me and knows my qualifications. However, he is a 'shendyflecking' coward, and at the time I was originally employed in this system, our Enemy was at his full strength at bringing us ('Hub and I) down, to the point of manufacturing false evidence against us.

Also, I was very efficient at my job, which made everyone else on the staff look bad. I think that is the real reason I was not rehired.

Next, I have a PT job with the local college. As of August 2012, I will have been there 10 years. The Enemy's attack on this job went nowhere, as I am still employed. I tried for a FT position at this same college about three years ago, but was passed over in favor of a young 30 year old male from out of town. In this case, I do believe it to be age discrimination, but there is no way I can prove it or prosecute such a case, as I am still employed as their PT and Fill-in person.

Had there been a problem with the BK, I don't think I would still be employed there. Likewise about the Enemy stalking me.

      Good wishes to you.

        Yes, I agree, that sucks.
There is no useful correlation between bankruptcy, credit score, and job performance/skills. I also think it's lazy.

Even though your friends did not disclose their bankruptcys, they probably should have done so upfront in the interview. Yes, the paperwork did not require the disclosure, but I think your friends should have said something about their cases, so that they could explain the 'Why, Where, When, and How' of the situation. Just my thoughts.

My one friend had been disclosing (the one that BK'd in 2008) at all interviews from 2008 to present. Not one job offer with over 70 interviews. Since she is desperate for a job, since being out for so long she decided not to disclose unless they asked or the paperwork asked and then she was fully prepared to disclose and discuss (job loss and medical). The first interview she took this new approach on they made her an offer...

It think it is dam'd if you do dam'd if you don't...

Thanks for this thread - I will be following! I just had a great interview today and the lady was all excited and wants to hire me. She told to that she was going to check my references but she didn't mention credit check. She asked if she would find anything that didn't match up and I thought she was talking about my truthfulness on my application for the jobs I had down there (all fine and legit including my three people references). On the application I filled out and signed, it mentions nothing about a credit check but I didn't think of my BK (from 2009 - no asset - PERFECT credit before that) at the time and now I am wondering if she is going to do one. The job is not with handling money but it is a large law office and one of the things they handle are bankruptcies. They state equal opportunity employeer and here is the basic statement:

"to provide equal employment opportunities for all applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, sex, physical or mental disability, development disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, or status as a special disabled veteran or veteran of the Vietnam era, or any other characteristic protected by law. Hiring decisions will be based on the qualifications of the applicant to perform the job for which the applicant applies."

Now, I am nervous though - I should have mentioned it? Of course I will explain when it comes up - my BK amount is relatively small. Grrr.. I am mad at myself for not thinking of menitoning it. If she had mentioned full background check (which I have been told is NOT supposed to equal credit check though) than I probably would have thought about - but she said references - Eeek, am i in trouble?

At this point, I would not go back and mention it...

Hubby, just got offered a new job and since our BK has been awhile, he forgot to mention it... So we are sitting on pins and needles ourselves right now...

I hope this works out great for both of us.... All the Best of Luck

I haven't filed BK yet and have been denied for two jobs in the past due to bad credit, so it isn't just the BK. The first job was back in 2005, it was for a check cashing type place in a casino. I had two too many negative accounts on my credit report (they allowed a certain amount) and the offer was rescinded. The second was in 2009, for a Federal job, not involving money at all. I had ONE negative over their limit so the offer was rescinded. A few years later, 2010, I was hired with a different Federal agency and even though I had worse credit, they hired me. I transferred to a different Federal Agency last year, they did a new background/credit and my even worse credit wasn't an issue for them, either. However, I know for a fact that there are MANY Federal jobs that I cannot get due to bad credit. If I file for a BK, it will be a few years before I can apply for those specific jobs, too, but I'm out either way.

I recently applied for a county job and was concerned that if offered, I wouldn't qualify for due to the credit check issue, even though the job wasn't in finance. I know the company my close friend works for, they deny a LOT of selected applicants due to "failing" the credit check, not only due to BK but simply to poor credit. It sucks and I wish there was something that was done about this.

Are you sure it was the bankruptcy and not something else on their report? What kind of jobs were these?

I'd disagree. I tend to go for the "Don't ask, don't tell" theory. There's no reason to ruin a potential job offer by offering up unnecessary and irrelevant information. Unless of course it's a job with the Federal Reserve, in that case I think it would have been on the application.

They have all kinds of ways of weeding out applicants. I just tried in November for a FT job with the City, and got my rejection letter the end of December. *Merry Christmas!* I don't know the reasons.

I also learned of a FT time position at the college I work PT at, after the fact that it had already been filled. I questioned the Dean of Libraries about it, and was told, "Sorry, but FT positions within the system are only open to other FT employees." The one hired had just finished her Master's Degree while working at the college. Now how many years of experience does she have?

Yet I had been with this college in this PT position for 10 years, and trying over the years to move up to FT, which TPTB are aware of....

Here is the problem, you have no proof it was the BK. You are merely speculating.

This is so true....but at the same time it would be nice to know why we don't get the job. I know the companies aren't going to say it for fear of lawsuits, but it is really discouraging to get so far along in the process only to get a generic "we're sorry but we're unable to offer you the position at this time". Why? Did my breath stink? Did I blink too many times in a minute? Am I too good looking for the office?? Its almost depressing!
